Yesterday I promised myself (and you) that I’d write every day.
It is 9:14 PM (PST), and I’ve just arrived back at my Airbnb after leaving for campus shortly after 7 this morning. It has been a long day, but I’m here, and I’m writing.
My 16 DBA colleagues and I are spending long days in class, and extra hours before and after preparing to share our proposed research statements in presentations at a 3-day Doctoral Conference that starts tomorrow morning.
Somehow, I lucked out and I don’t present until Friday – although maybe it would have been better to have drawn the short straw and have it out of the way tomorrow?
The current working title of my presentations is:
Inclusion & Belonging in the Workplace:
Preparing Managers to Lead Inclusively.
This has changed at least 17 times since I arrived on campus last week, and I’ve been told it’ll change another 170 times or so over the next year.
As I was preparing today and wading through research articles to find impactful data that supports something I’ve known to be true for many years, managers have a HUGE impact on how their direct reports experience an organization, I found something interesting I’d love to get your thoughts on….
“For better or worse, managers have a greater impact on our mental health than doctors and therapists — and even equal to that of spouses and partners.”
(UKG Inc, 2023)
I’d love to know what you think about this stat.?
Was it a positive or negative experience with a manager that came to mind for you first?
I have thoughts… but the air fryer warming up my leftovers went off a few minutes ago, so I’m going to eat and go to sleep.
But… I wrote.
I wrote today.

Well done Melissa, you're doing great!
